We got up early and had breakfast on the panoramic terrace. An American couple from Philly was siting next to us and we exchanged Sicily experiences. They were in Monreale to see the Duomo and that's what was on our agenda today before heading to the airport.

our last few hours in sicily
The festival was still in full swing and the entrance to the Duomo and cloister was free of charge. The mosaics were incredible and are considered the finest in the world. They are meticulously preserved and maintained. They looked like they were created yesterday. The 12th century cathedral is considered one of the architectural wonders of the medieval world.

There are lighting boxes at different locations that when a euro is dropped in illuminate sections of the walls and ceiling. The tours led in Italian, English, German, Dutch described the different bible stories portrayed on the walls and the history of the construction. We got there at around 9 and by the time we left there were twice as many visitors including the couple we met at breakfast.

Time to head for the airport! Walking back to the hotel was a dismal sight - the only street that leads from the parking lot is the very same that the culmination of the festival takes place - the Church of S.S. Crocifisso. There was a police blockade and loads of people on the road waiting for the final procession led my the Archbishop in to the church for mass.

Stress! We had to leave to catch our flight and no cars were allowed to pass through. We pulled up to the fringe of the crowd and I asked the officer if we could pass because we had to get to the airport and he said it would only be 10 minutes.
So we turned off the engine and waited. We were OK with time but there was also the task of getting out of the town once we passed the church. The streets were flooded with people and we drove very slowly, parting the crowd.
We were not alone but were the first in a line of other cars. After a lot of sweat we made it to the Palermo ring road. It was easy to return the car and then we took a shuttle bus to the terminal. We made it with enough time to get espressos and cannolis!!!!

our only road out of town
